African
Drums]
Many African drums are handmade and are completely
individual. Traditionally, the heads are either shaved goat or de-haired
goat. In this section, we have also included African-style drums made elsewhere
in the world. For current availability or special requests, please call or
email
us. We do not keep all these drums in stock at all times. Please allow 6-10
weeks for delivery for special orders.
Djembe is pronounced (JEM-bay).
They are goblet shaped drums known for booming base and crisp edge
tones. Traditional djembes are carved out of a single log.
Ashikos
(ah-SHEE-koh) are originally from Sierra Leone, but are now made
throughout western Africa. They are cone shaped, with a much smaller
bottom dimension than top. They offer deep base and sharp edge
tones.
We are pleased to announce that we are now
carrying
 Djembes from
Mali.
These are the best Djembes we've ever found. No other African-made drums can
compare--every detail is attended to: the shells are meticulously carved to just
the right proportions; the metal rings are custom welded to fit each drum
perfectly; only the best goat skins are used; the bearing edges are perfectly
level, smooth and rounded; the wood is well sanded and finished inside and out
with liquid shea butter; European 2-part polyester cord is used; and each drum
comes professionally tuned, ready to play.
You will not find any better African-made
Djembe!
