About Miguel
Miguel
Medina was born and raised in upstate New York. After a bout of depression and
alcohol abuse, he was reborn with the help of Creator onto a path of an overwhelming
abundance of love and beauty. He decided to act on his appreciation by choosing to
exist on this plane to his fullest potential in order to benefit the collective whole in
the best way possible. He started expressing himself through playing music, dancing
and his unique ways of praying and meditating. He began to travel, learning great
lessons of faith, adjusting to his environment and surrendering to the natural flow of
things. He began to recognize visions of self- sufficiency through creative
expression.
In the early spring of
'96, he acquired his very first Lakota love flute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He
took to heart the song of the flute, attracting the attention of flutemaker John Eagle
Heart in Santa Fe. When Eagle Heart, who is also a pipe carrier and runs traditional
sweats, told Miguel that anyone who plays the flute like he did should learn to make their
own flutes, he invited Miguel to spend a month on his land in Del Norte, Colorado, living
in a tipi and learning the gift of flute making. The experience was unforgettable,
including praying in the sweat lodge for the first time and sharing space with golden
eagles, antelopes and rattlesnakes.
Two years
later, back in upstate New York, Miguel met a professional musician and amazing woodworker
named Eric Martzak, who taught him to make flutes in any key, with different types of
scales, and double and triple droning flutes.
In August of '99, he returned to Portland, Oregon, where he
helped establish an organic farm and community living situation with friends. He has
since moved next door to the farm, where he lives on a strong and disciplined
spiritual
path. He is now learning the path of the "Red Road," which makes sense to
him because his whole life he has communicated with Creator through listening to the wind
and all of creation. It resonates with him to learn traditional ways from people
whose ancestors knew the medicine of the plants, the animals and the energies of
this land.
He is currently a musician, playing djembe, didgeridoo &
flutes, and singing with the band "Land of the Blind," as well as a
craftsperson. Besides flutes, he also makes drums, didgeridoos, leather work,
jewelry and dreamcatchers. He focuses most of his energy on the traditional Native
tuning, but makes ethnic flutes of all kinds, custom made to certain keys and with
specific animal fetishes and wood carvings. He believes that creative expression is
a very potent way to strengthen one's connection with one's self and Great Spirit.
He's honored that he's been able to tap into these gifts, and is extremely grateful for
the abundance they've brought into his life.
He has performed service for the community, both with "Food
Not Bombs" and as a Free Kitchen volunteer at the Rainbow Gatherings for universal
love and world peace. He has also performed for emotionally challenged children.
His interests also include organic farming, alternative housing and alternative
power sources.
