The Story of the Heartline Bear

When the child is abused in any way, mind, body, spirit or emotions, Grandmother Bear takes that innocent part of our heart and holds it.  Grandmother Bear is the guardian of the child spirit, our innocence, and our whole heart.  To be wholehearted is to play like the children…without conditions or barriers.  The nature of the child is to love and give unconditionally.  As we heal our cycles of abuse,  we come up against our shame.  A certain amount of shame is natural, yet with abuse we carry shame that is not ours – that of our abusers.  In order to get our hearts back and reclaim our wholeness and completeness, we must make offerings to Grandmother Bear.  She does not stand for abuse.  When we learn to hold ourselves sacred, to nurture and love ourselves, that child spirit begins to trust, and the bear gives us our heart back.  This is the origin of the teddy bear – to learn to hold ourselves sacred.  When we do, we break the cycle of abuse, and honor the love and wisdom of the universe.

In the Medicine Wheel wisdom, we have to complete our own circle first.  Doing this inner work is necessary for us to feel whole, complete, and esteemed.  We are spiritual beings in a human experience.  Unless we go inward and down through our fears (illusions) to heal the abuse, we posture and protect ourselves, and play with less than a whole heart.  Going to retrieve the child spirit has to be with a trusted one, for it is indeed like dying.  When we complete our circles, we are whole, complete and free.  Then we are able to have functional relationships with other whole and complete people, and play wholeheartedly with all who come into our circles.  Grandmother Bear personifies the love and wisdom necessary to heal ourselves and then our planet.  The earth longs for our tears.  Our sacred Mother Earth can transform pain if we only trust and release the purifying tears that are held from abuse.  When that little child inside feels safe, that child will cry those tears.  That trust must come from ourselves, another and the child spirit, protected by Grandmother Bear.
