Smudging is a
simple way of thanking the earth and purifying a space. Variations of smudging are
found in cultures throughout the world. Incenses of many varieties have been used
for cleansing and protection. In the tradition of Native Americans of the Great
Basin and high desert, sage is used for purification. Some other herbs used for
cleansing include cedar, juniper, pinion pine, copal and myrrh. Sweetgrass and other
pleasantly scented herbs are used to bring in good energy after an area has been cleared.
